Hi, my name is Adrian Encinosa and welcome to my E-Portfolio. I am working on my MLIS degree with the goal of becoming a special librarian that involves working in either an academic library, an archive or government related work. I have an interest in working in special collections departments or any department that deals with local records  or history as far as archives or government related work goes in the MLIS field. While pursuing my Bachelor's degree, I had my first internship experience working in the special collections department for the Tampa Bay History Center where I digitized blueprint drawings of Tampa architect Eliot C. Fletcher. I gained further internship experience processing archival documents for the City of Tampa Archives and learned about metadata standards used in archives and libraries. I also had the privilege of being able to conduct research in Spain for the Summer where I found and transcribed Spanish documents on Florida from the late 17th century and early 18th century. My most recent experience that I am proud of was working as a remote metadata intern working for the Library of Congress where I learned more about creating and editing metadata for digital collections projects. 

 

This E-Portfolio includes a Home page and the student outcomes of my MLIS studies which are Leadership & Innovation, Systems & Services, Knowledge Representation, Theory & Praxis and a Statement of Integrity. The sections on this page that cover the four student outcomes contain artifacts from six core classes as well as electives which showcase skills that I have learned throughout the 39 credit hour MLIS program at the University of South Florida.  The artifacts featured in the this e-portfolio address the goals of each student outcome which represent the various skills required to work as a professional librarian or archivist.

 

The six core classes that I took throughout my studies helped me develop important skills that are required to be effective and efficient in a professional library or archive environment. Core courses such as LIS 6721 - Research Methods taught me how to address missing gaps in libraries and archives and what research methods to use when addressing them, while LIS 6409 - Intro to Administration taught me leaderships skills that involve library management and how to develop projects for libraries. Organization of Information was crucial in developing a better understanding of library technology in how everything is catalogued and organized into a library database. For developing skills to address user needs, LIS - 6603 Basic Information Services taught me how to acquire materials for patrons and LIS 6511 - Collection's Development and Maintenance elaborated my understanding of user needs through assessments and acquisition projects. In LIS 5020 - Foundations of Library Science I also learned about the values and theory of librarianship , the history of libraries and its research methodologies. Of the electives that I took featured in this E-portfolio is LIS 6515 - Web Archiving which introduced to the tech based aspect of the archival field where I learned how to preserve digital information stored on the web using computer software.

Through my internship experience and knowledge gained in the MLIS program, I am confident that I have learned versatile skills for my career. I am looking forward to entering a career where I can combine my passion for history and research not only to better myself but to also better my community.
